Participating in the Hannover Messe 2019 has been a great opportunity for us to further understand the most important challenges and trends of the global industries. We believe that Olympe can bring substantive value in making business sense out of IoT, considering the real-time data processing and edge computing capabilities.

Why edge computing?

The data volume constantly shared between devices is growing exponentially and is expected to reach 44 ZB by 2020 (*Hewlett Packard, Pioneer Summit HM19). At this growth speed, there is no possible way that our infrastructures can support and manage such a data tsunami, as datacenters are unable to change as quickly as the business environment demands and can’t address that amount of data in a centralized architecture.

In addition, knowing that only 4% of that data is estimated to be actually used*, there is a colossal opportunity to re-think and improve the way enterprises collect, manage, and interpret data. Cleaning and processing the data directly on the edge means that only data of higher value (way less) would be directed toward central systems.

By 2025, 75% of data will be generated and processed outside the data centers* and smart sensors will do a significant part of this job. On such sensors, we can push software that will allow them to retrieve specifications by themselves. Then the sensors can send data to a centralized system only when a measure gets out of a range. Data are locally analyzed, decentralized on edge intelligence.

Add real-time so it makes more sense

It is not because you can set up a data update every 2, 10, or 30 minutes that you can call it a “real-time” solution.

If it needs 15 seconds for your sensor to communicate to your dashboard a change in vibration or temperature, neither “real-time” it is.

A true real-time solution is a solution that connects all your (hardware and software) devices from their internal memory, which allows to deploy an update or share an information instantly with all of them. This means that an end-to-end real-time solution, must be able to process real-time data as it goes. For example, to monitor the average of multiple sensors, all single values must be constantly averaged.
